Summer Ops – An A320 First Officer’s Day in Heat and Thunderstorms

Show notes

Episode 46 of Aviation-Quest.cc – Stories from Above

Summer may be associated with blue skies, holidays and seemingly perfect flying weather. For airline crews, however, high temperatures and powerful summer weather can create an entirely different operational picture.

Recorded on August 12, 2026, just hours before a solar eclipse passed close to Stefan Lorenz’s home base in Palma de Mallorca, Episode 46 of Aviation-Quest.cc reunites host Jürgen Reis with his co-host and Airbus A320 First Officer for the seasonal counterpart to Episode 22, “Winter Ops.”

This time, the focus is heat rather than ice — and the question of whether summer flying really is easier than winter flying.

Together they explore:

• how high temperatures affect aircraft performance, runway requirements and takeoff weight
• why thermals welcomed by glider pilots can make airline approaches surprisingly turbulent
• how extremely hot runways can contribute to floating during landing and even lead to a go-around
• why summer thunderstorms can cause major delays and airspace restrictions
• why airliners cannot simply fly above or around every thunderstorm
• why weather-related delays are ultimately about safety rather than inconveniencing passengers
• what it is like conducting a walk-around on an apron exposed to extreme summer heat
• how hot an aircraft cabin can become before the air-conditioning system has cooled it down
• Stefan’s biggest personal summer challenge and his practical advice for passengers travelling in hot climates

Summer operations are a reminder that clear skies and high temperatures do not necessarily mean easy flying. Behind delays, go-arounds and changing flight plans are crews making decisions with one overriding priority: getting everyone safely to their destination.

And because somewhere in the world it is always summer, Episode 46 is not only a seasonal listen — it offers a fascinating look at challenges airline crews face throughout the year.

00:00:45: Yeah welcome aviation community out there!

00:00:50: This is AviationQuest C an audio podcast.

00:00:54: we are already on record.

00:00:56: forty six And yeah, my name is Jürgen Reis.

00:01:00: I coach pilots in mental performance with a special focus on assessments, simulator sessions and training environments.

00:01:08: Also today... I'm such lucky position from the beginning of this podcast to be our two hosts team!

00:01:19: Today I welcome Stefan Loretz.

00:01:24: He's a professional pilot pilot flying the A-SIII-II with a special focus on Sunseekers all over Europe.

00:01:34: in a moment.

00:01:35: Did I sum this up correctly, Stefan?

00:01:38: Yes you did!

00:01:40: Although right now as we record it's August of twenty twenty six... You don't actually have to leave your country

00:01:47: huh?!

00:01:47: The whole of Europe is hot and sunny everywhere And It has been for weeks.

00:01:53: so In theory you don't actually have to get on a plane, but of course I want keep my job.

00:01:58: So please fly!

00:01:59: You know?

00:02:00: Fly to the south of

00:02:01: me.

00:02:02: Speaking of me... ...you made me envy your sunny Mediterranean island all winter long and now.... In those days I really enjoy, we just had a little bit of private conversation before this podcast.

00:02:16: So in comparison to Barma de Mallorca is certainly in Austria with only thirty three degrees or something like that it's almost cool huh?

00:02:26: Yeah!

00:02:27: That would be nice and refreshing for us.

00:02:30: We've had forty between forty and forty-three degrees every single day.

00:02:36: now I think two weeks and at midnight it's thirty-two degrees.

00:02:43: And the sea is, uh...I think its thirty three degrees.

00:02:47: now It's a new record.

00:02:49: The sea has never been this warm.

00:02:51: So everywhere just warm.

00:02:52: You can't go into water Its warm.

00:02:54: you cant open windows at night Uh..its just heat heat heat yeah Which i think something that he wanted to talk about right?

00:03:05: I was just thinking you are building a beautiful bridge.

00:03:08: brings us nicely to the episode today, because we're recording this on August the twelfth.

00:03:15: It will be online in September twenty.

00:03:18: so this is calendar wise still summer.

00:03:22: and yeah i was just scrolling down our archive here on our homepage which by the way aviation-quest dot CC, where you find everything about us and also contact information etc.

00:03:35: And there was episode twenty two when it was named Winter Ops on a three twenty first officers day in ice and snow.

00:03:45: hard to imagine.

00:03:46: did we really record this?

00:03:48: A few months ago feels quite remote.

00:03:51: yeah Yeah

00:03:52: It does.

00:03:55: Today's title I don't know if he just We don't know what today's title is, but it something in the direction of Summer Ops with Stefan.

00:04:06: This at least a working title here on my podcast calendar.

00:04:10: and yeah this topic today is Stefan.

00:04:13: And I think August twelfth some you might remember.

00:04:19: was there something special about these days Stefan?

00:04:22: A little bit something up into stars.

00:04:28: Tell us a little bit about this.

00:04:29: You are pilot, you know much more and even so an astronaut is just the pilot.

00:04:38: Let's leave it like that!

00:04:40: You're not an astronaut but you can be a pilot.

00:04:42: But tell me something about it.

00:04:44: Yes today is the twelfth of August twenty-twenty six which means there will going to be full solar eclipse in parts of Europe and I'm super lucky.

00:04:55: Our house is literally five minutes away from the line where it's full, so if i would stay my I think a ninety percent eclipse, but it's not of long drive.

00:05:06: So i will actually drive down towards the airport and enjoy one hundred percent eclipses.

00:05:13: There are thousands...I mean you know Mallorca is busy anyway we have millions of tourists every year.

00:05:20: But today there're an additional thousand people that come to this island who want be on their beach and on rooftop bars to watch the eclipse.

00:05:33: And there's parties everywhere, boats that will take you out into the sea with cocktails.

00:05:40: so it is a bit crazy!

00:05:42: There's already lots of roads.

00:05:45: I read have been closed by the police because they're too busy.

00:05:49: Some beaches are also being closed, there is already to many people.

00:05:53: so anyway it will be crazy but i think its gonna great!

00:05:57: Ever before and I'm so lucky.

00:06:02: Have a day off today, I don't have to fly And it's five minutes from my house.

00:06:07: So i'm really looking forward to it.

00:06:09: after this podcast?

00:06:11: I will jump into My car and see if I can find A little side road somewhere that nobody knows.

00:06:17: To get closer the line you know where You are

00:06:24: local I'm sure you will find a place, but also here in my region or our region there is almost ninety percent.

00:06:35: But really at the zenith of solar eclipse this is nice!

00:06:42: Also today we said with a little bit of luck Stefan would be able because during the winter episode it was just an AI image in the YouTube channel and also today's afterwards on LinkedIn, maybe Stefan is advantageous enough.

00:07:02: In his side road car that there will be a nice spot for photo?

00:07:08: Maybe I don't know.

00:07:10: my phone doesn't have an amazing camera!

00:07:12: My wife's phone has an amazing.

00:07:22: You have to negotiate with your wife.

00:07:24: This is your job, I'm here the co-host in Dormion.

00:07:29: this is your responsibility.

00:07:30: so listen up you know where the photo is and yeah Stefan will make it a period.

00:07:36: Yeah, we'll probably have to watch The Windows or something.

00:07:41: Anyway that's the plan for today.

00:07:45: exciting So, and also it means maybe for two minutes.

00:07:50: It's not going to be so hot because the sun will be gone which would be nice.

00:07:57: Yeah I am.

00:07:58: This was the same thing i was thinking but i'm curious if this really happened Because you know The whole city is heated up like

00:08:08: crazy

00:08:08: in evening!

00:08:09: It was a remote hope of mine.

00:08:11: But yeah Let see.

00:08:17: I think what we can promise is that there will be a video version, not of the Solar Eclipse but of Flight Sim Video because we are an audio podcast.

00:08:28: But even though so to say just on audio podcasts you use the word Just one more time all over place and streaming platforms We are also on YouTube and thanks to Stefan's work.

00:08:43: He is a quite experienced youtuber I can say like this with over Twenty years, over twenty years FS clips.

00:08:52: it's true isn't?

00:08:53: It's really true.

00:08:54: Yeah my channel is twenty hits old.

00:08:56: yeah

00:08:57: Twenty years in three months or four months when these broadcasts online.

00:09:02: Yeah, and there's a side channel of SF Clips.

00:09:04: It is aviation-quest podcast.

00:09:07: And it has also today our YouTube video and its not the two of us talking but flights in video.

00:09:14: Don't know if they are real world flight going on?

00:09:17: I guess yes

00:09:18: Yes!

00:09:19: Today i thought do something nice because We had Just Flight on, some podcasts back.

00:09:27: So today we're doing a flight that happens all the time several times per day from Zurich to Vienna but going back in time with taking the Fokker one hundred by Just Flight and old Swiss delivery.

00:09:41: so you know kind of like it would have seen back in the nineteen nineties.

00:09:46: And yeah, it's a beautiful aircraft.

00:09:48: I love flying.

00:09:49: the Fokker one hundred is really cool aircraft.

00:09:52: so and he used to do that flight i remember seeing them in Vienna and Zurich.

00:09:57: So something back from the nineteen nineties bit of nostalgia

00:10:04: Amazing!

00:10:05: Nostalgia Yeah Stefan after this prolonged intro but think was worthwhile today Do you think we should start the actual podcast now?

00:10:17: Yes, let's jump right in.

00:10:18: I mean... We've already sort of talked about a topic!

00:10:24: So..I think prepared questions for me so lets see what is going to happen now.

00:10:30: Certainly i am my favorite spot again and love being host an interviewer And certainly also prepare for your professional questionnaire here.

00:10:38: The first question Stefan What changes when summer arrives?

00:10:43: But yeah, easy question.

00:10:46: And in a natural what changes and summer arrives?

00:10:52: okay so people probably know airlines have summer and winter schedules.

00:10:59: So there's the day particular day.

00:11:03: it used to be one day across industry but now each airline has its own where the airline switches from winter to summer roster.

00:11:14: In Europe, Summer Roster is usually much busier.

00:11:18: so all of a sudden one day till next you have way more flights in your roster.

00:11:25: also there are certain destinations we don't even fly through in the Winter.

00:11:29: We only fly two in the Summer.

00:11:32: So suddenly you fly back into these airports that haven been to for half year.

00:11:38: Also, you need to be careful because a lot of airports that are not busy in the winter they tend to do any kind of modernization and all that stuff.

00:11:49: In the winter months.

00:11:50: so make sure your read through all the documentation if anything has changed or some taxiways before we start the summer ops.

00:12:01: usually it's good idea read through some stuff, make sure that all these airports you haven't flown to nothing has changed.

00:12:10: And if anything is change do know about it.

00:12:13: and yeah also the passengers change.

00:12:16: in winter we fly skiers from the Scandinavian countries to Austria in Sbruck Salzburg, that's a lot of stuff we do in winter.

00:12:27: In summer we fly Germans and Austrians with people from Spain, Greece or Italy.

00:12:33: so the kind of flights you can change.

00:12:38: Luckily there is no more de-icing because it has very little fog.

00:12:43: but As we discussed later on, summer ops can be very difficult.

00:12:50: Everyone has upped the number of flights so the airports are much busier.

00:12:56: We usually have departure slots which means that often once we boarded everybody and were ready to go for a while before we can actually take off, sometimes this could be an hour or so which is quite annoying.

00:13:13: So the whole thing feels very different from winter.

00:13:16: it's very busy lots going on The airports are full It's hot as just discussed In Mayoka where I'm based.

00:13:27: its extreme in the Winter months has about two hundred flights per day.

00:13:34: Now it has one thousand two hundred flights per day and handles one hundred eighty-thousand passengers a day.

00:13:43: So if Mallorca would not be seasonal, If we'd have this every single day It wouldn't be... One of the busiest airports in Europe!

00:13:56: It's amazing!

00:14:03: To answer your question in a nutshell, the big thing is that you go from zero to one hundred.

00:14:09: In every respect!

00:14:13: So flying into summer is not necessarily easier because after winter ops many listeners would also think okay this was so-to say hard season but summer isn't necessary easy season for our pilot?

00:14:27: No... The challenges are different.

00:14:31: In the winter, you're constantly battling nature.

00:14:35: Let's put it this way with cold-soaked wings, with icing, snowstorms and snow covered runways and slush and fog and freezing fog... All these things.

00:14:50: Summer usually, unless you have thunderstorms which of course can happen in the summer but they're usually quite localized You know?

00:14:59: They don't cover whole countries.

00:15:02: Summer weather-wise is usually much better.

00:15:06: It's warm it's nice its sunny...you have long days So it doesn't get dark very early or lots of sunlight.

00:15:15: But the difference is just the amount of traffic the amount of people, uh...the heat can also be a problem for the aircraft.

00:15:25: Like now it's just too hot!

00:15:27: The aircraft performance is really poor and yeah so the challenges are different.

00:15:33: Yeah I don't think-I don't know if i would have to pick?

00:15:37: I will still pick this summer but I wouldn't say its much easier To Be Honest with you.

00:15:43: It's Just Different, Different Challenges

00:15:47: I mean, certainly.

00:15:48: I also got some experience in flying motor gliders into summer and yeah you need a little bit more runway.

00:15:57: Climbing is sometimes please!

00:16:00: Please!!

00:16:00: I want to go into the cooler part of the atmosphere but it takes lot's time.

00:16:12: How about this factor in an airliner like A-Series?

00:16:16: Why do longer runways matter also for you?

00:16:20: The performance in hot weather is really not great with any aircraft.

00:16:28: Especially airliners, they spent the vast majority of their life up there at flight level, three-five zero, three nine zero.

00:16:37: Three eight zero in this cold air.

00:16:40: so the engines are designed to be most efficient in that cold air because thats what really matters.

00:16:47: Thats why you spend your three hours two hours five hours sometimes.

00:16:52: So they're not really good dealing with hot air.

00:16:57: Hot air is less dense, you know that's.

00:17:00: we don't need to go into all the meteorology of it.

00:17:04: Hot there just not good for an engine!

00:17:06: It doesn't perform they don't like it and so... You need a lot more runway to take off if the climb performance is sometimes really abysmal.

00:17:22: And obviously that's very important for us because if you take off, let's say in Innsbruck where there are a lot of high mountains it's important to get out.

00:17:34: even when we lose an engine We always have to assume what happens and so maybe We cannot fill up the cabin with passengers.

00:17:47: we have to reduce a number of passengers or something like that just To be safe.

00:17:53: doesn't happen very often, but it does happen.

00:17:56: So

00:17:56: hot weather can actually limit the takeoff weight in an A-Series XX.

00:18:01: If they run way short you need specific climb performance.

00:18:05: that can happen.

00:18:07: If here, like I'm lucky and based in Mallorca is really long runways we have eight to eighty seven four seven landing years.

00:18:17: so the three twenty has no problem at end of runway usually used as just water even if you have a poor climb performance there are obstacles.

00:18:27: for us it's not a problem.

00:18:29: but if fly your part Innsbruck, Salzburg, Graz even.

00:18:36: All these places you need to be careful in terms of climb performance runway length.

00:18:43: I mean we have software for this.

00:18:45: Of course that will tell us exactly what we can and cannot do but usually in the winter This is not a fact at all.

00:18:52: The airlines are.

00:18:53: the engines love.

00:18:55: cold weather give us great performance But in the summer Not so much.

00:19:02: What about the sermons in twenty-twenty six?

00:19:04: I mean certainly also speaking of my glider, especially glider years.

00:19:09: those are the goals Of every glider.

00:19:11: you know to get into the sermon.

00:19:13: but for you.

00:19:14: I think double lenses Are not a thing here.

00:19:17: seeing your looking forward forum We just had our private conversation.

00:19:21: so before this podcast where You were mentioning there is a lot of energy and air.

00:19:27: So especially in this year There seems to be quite a lot going on.

00:19:32: Also here in my region there were some quite severe thunderstorms, yeah what about the thermals and what comes after it?

00:19:41: Yeah so for you as a glider pilot thermals are exactly what you want.

00:19:46: their updraft they carry you to higher altitude.

00:19:51: Yippee!

00:19:53: What we don't like in the airliners is updrafts at low level because we are supposed to fly towards a runway.

00:20:02: very precise ILS, you know about that instrument.

00:20:06: landing system approaches.

00:20:07: They're very precise.

00:20:08: they're down to the degree and if you hit a thermal then all of a sudden the plane starts climbing instead of descending and then you need to correct for that and maybe you come out of the thermal very quickly.

00:20:21: so the plane drops and then hits the next thermal... So it can be quite bumpy actually i would say Because here in Mallorca, we have two approaches.

00:20:31: One comes over the land and one comes into the sea.

00:20:35: And when you come to the sea there are no thermals because water is a very nice constant temperature and is a smooth surface.

00:20:44: It's hot, but it's very nice and smooth.

00:20:47: if you're coming over the water sorry with the land You are constantly being thrown up and down and left then right even when there's no wind.

00:20:57: sometimes There's like three knots of wind And yet it feels like they should be forty knots because your constantly been bounced around.

00:21:08: the air is full of energy, it's very unstable.

00:21:12: Not great.

00:21:13: and then when you reach the end of the approach... You come over to threshold ...you fly over the runway!

00:21:19: The runway is very hot at the moment.

00:21:22: I don't know what surface temperature.

00:21:24: here in some airports they actually give pilots the surface temperature as a guide And its not unusual for the surface temperatures be in high forties.

00:21:39: So you have this hot asphalt underneath where all the air rises rapidly.

00:21:45: When your actually trying to land and flare, You've got be really careful because it's possible that aircraft just floats down the runway And maybe goes outside of the touchdown zone which then is a go around cannot land outside.

00:22:05: different techniques of flying.

00:22:09: And yeah, like you said a lot of energy in the air which of course if the air gets moist and the right conditions exist will very quickly create thunderstorms Which is also not another nice thing.

00:22:22: Yeah I mean Not every perfect day with a lot Of thermal ends since under storms but also here The last days almost every evening apart from yesterday and also today.

00:22:33: it looks quite good.

00:22:35: so for a solar eclipse optimistic forecast here.

00:22:40: but the last days you know everyday from the swiss mountains ascentis etc.

00:22:45: As I said, part of yesterday huge thunderstorms sometimes was building up throughout the day in an evening.

00:22:53: wow suddenly from one hour to another It's been quite severe.

00:22:59: What about the airliners?

00:23:00: I mean thunderstorms are also for you, it's not easy going.

00:23:04: They're all so dangerous!

00:23:05: Not only for gliders or motorgliders.

00:23:08: Yeah yeah, thunderstorms horrible things.

00:23:11: we stay away from them as far as can they.

00:23:14: very specific rules on how to avoid thunderstorms.

00:23:18: if there is a big cloud that clearly has convective activity as we call it.

00:23:27: So basically something that is either a thunderstorm or about to become one, then we need to pass the downwind.

00:23:35: so you look at where the wind is coming from and want be on the down-wind side.

00:23:41: I think it's forty five kilometers, something like that.

00:23:54: So let's consider safe to pass the thunderstorms.

00:23:57: you never ever fly into a thunderstorm.

00:24:00: there are huge hail hailstones inside much bigger than what you would get on the ground because they start melting as they fall down.

00:24:10: There can be tennis ball size or bigger and could really damage an aircraft really badly.

00:24:18: You have updrafts, downdrafts with up to five thousand feet per minute so this could cause turbulence to a degree where you would lose control of the aircraft.

00:24:30: So no thunderstorms are big-big no go which is another reason why sometimes you might get onto an aircraft and It's a beautiful day blue skies And the pilots tell you yeah there some weather.

00:24:45: We have to wait here for a while before we can take off.

00:24:49: May seem strange, because around you everything is fine but you need imagine if there's big thunderstorms.

00:24:56: let say Milan has lot of thunderstorm at the moment Because they are just south of Alps.

00:25:04: If alot planes want fly that route and cannot They need avoid thunderstorm And all of sudden You will have bottleneck or traffic.

00:25:16: So planes need to wait before they can enter that area.

00:25:20: And obviously we don't wait in the air, We wait on the ground.

00:25:24: so when you arrive near Milan They have actually a space for us In that airspace and because thunderstorms are dynamic these things Can change very quickly.

00:25:35: Sometimes they say yeah You can take off within ten minutes.

00:25:38: Then the thunderstorm gets worse say, sorry we need you to wait another twenty minutes.

00:25:44: We just don't have the space and that's an other aspect of thunderstorms.

00:25:49: so people I don't think understand really.

00:25:52: it is not a danger flying into them.

00:25:55: they are having huge impact on traffic over Europe which already at capacity.

00:26:02: They were also in meteorology.

00:26:04: I remember Glider school, they had a big topic and certainly you as an airliner.

00:26:12: You cannot just fly around the thunderstorms.

00:26:16: it's so easy

00:26:19: You're not alone in the sky.

00:26:21: Yeah, everything is a little bit more especially you.

00:26:24: it's regulated but also meteorologically wise.

00:26:28: this isn't just the thunderstorm itself.

00:26:30: I mean whole system can be quite severe thing and sometimes there are something going on behind or besides that.

00:26:41: often i think at best if your mind is under storm its simple thing to fly around.

00:26:48: but when you get a little bit deeper into meteorology, you think aha and also above it.

00:26:53: There is some more things to think about.

00:27:00: Yeah I have be very careful.

00:27:01: the turbulence can extend outside of the cloud.

00:27:06: hail Can also fall out off top of the clouds And blown by wind.

00:27:12: this why shouldn't we upwind?

00:27:14: Because if the hail falls out of top-of-the-cloud, The wind will carry it upwind.

00:27:20: If you are upwind You could be in clear skies away from the cloud and you can still get hit by hail.

00:27:26: So yeah...you're right There's a lot to consider Which is why when we did our meteorology exam I guess its same for you Thunderstorms are whole topic.

00:27:39: It not just type of clouds Its an entire chapter that you have to learn about.

00:27:46: And they also can get really, really high.

00:27:49: I mean this is i don't know what was the may.

00:27:51: i ask you?

00:27:52: What was one of the highest towering thunderstorms you ever experienced?

00:27:59: stayed away from to say it like this

00:28:02: well they go to the chopper pause so they It's not space of course, but you know tropopause stratosphere all that stuff.

00:28:13: So they go all the way up there and on a hot summer stay when everything Expands including our atmosphere.

00:28:21: They can go all The way out to like I don't know forty five thousand feet or

00:28:26: yeah remember Especially in your region down towards Africa.

00:28:34: They are massive

00:28:36: So they are higher than our plane can climb, so we cannot fly over them.

00:28:42: It's just not possible there!

00:28:46: Let us go from the highest edge of the atmosphere back to ground and I mean the apron itself.

00:28:54: you mentioned a hot one with but the apron in itself.

00:28:59: how hot does it get?

00:29:01: Yeah, that's a huge problem at the moment.

00:29:04: As you can probably imagine an airport is essentially massive slab of concrete flat concrete so it heats up a lot.

00:29:16: So when you stand on the apron You can literally feel they heat from the concrete underneath your and then you surround by aircraft that blow out lots of hot air from all kinds of openings, you know.

00:29:29: Air conditioning obviously the APU ,the engines everything running.

00:29:37: so doing the walk around which is something we have to do before every flight in uniform.

00:29:43: it's extremely uncomfortable at the moment when your workaround usually takes no more than five minutes but it feels like an eternity.

00:29:55: And I have to say, i feel really sorry for all the people that work on the ramp the whole day you know?

00:30:02: The baggage loaders...the people who do catering and wheelchair services.

00:30:08: ...the ramp agents that are standing there in the heat, the entire day.

00:30:13: We always try to be really nice to them as a crew because we have lots of water bottles on board and usually give them a bottle with some cups so they're hydrated if there is a slot for example where you need to wait.

00:30:36: if they have somewhere with an air conditioning, that can go too.

00:30:39: If you want to stay on the aircraft a little bit.

00:30:42: so we try and help them as best as possible.

00:30:44: but the ramp in summer right now at these forty degrees is a horrible place.

00:30:51: I just don't understand how people work in this environment all day.

00:30:57: The walk around.

00:30:58: it's already too much for me.

00:31:01: I was just thinking, i got one liter of water here and i started drinking in the minutes before we started recording.

00:31:10: And now we are thirty minutes live on tape.

00:31:12: it's almost empty!

00:31:14: I'm just speaking here and also back to our private conversation that i mentioned.

00:31:23: peaceful river here.

00:31:24: i enjoy my swimming throughout the day.

00:31:26: sometimes it's just a couple of hundred meters and it feels like a kilometer or two in the moment.

00:31:32: And also you are an experienced hiker but I guess to walk around can also feel like hike at some days huh?

00:31:40: Yeah, It is really not nice yeah!

00:31:43: Its so hot its so hot...I don't know what the temperature is Just above the apron But he would not surprise me if this tent degrees hotter than what you would have otherwise, so instead of forty degrees it's fifty degrees etc.

00:32:00: I just sometimes wonder how all this works in places like Dubai or Abu Dhabi where the air temperature is already fifty-fifty five you know?

00:32:11: The ramp must be incredible!

00:32:14: i've never experienced that...I've been to these places but always in winter ...never went there in summer.

00:32:20: But it must be unbelievably hot here.

00:32:25: And from outside to the inside, how hot can a cabin become?

00:32:30: Yeah that's another thing!

00:32:31: So passengers will usually not get to experience this too much.

00:32:36: but sometimes when we start our duty... The aircraft will have been.

00:32:43: let say you had a duty at lunchtime.

00:32:46: you drive out to the aircraft and the aircraft landed early in the morning.

00:32:50: And it's not at that gate, so not connected with a finger or average.

00:32:56: It is parked on remote stand where buses need to take passengers.

00:33:00: So its been sitting there for hours In the sun.

00:33:04: What we are talking about essentially Is metal tube that's been in the sun all day.

00:33:11: When you open a door of aircraft, it literally feels like you've just opened an oven.

00:33:17: inside is so hot!

00:33:21: So... The first thing we do I mean.. We can't run and start APU to get air-conditioning.

00:33:29: That not how works.

00:33:30: We need to run checklists We need to go through some checks.

00:33:36: Make sure everything is correct, then we are allowed an APU fire test and all these things.

00:33:44: Once you've done this, start the APU which provides air conditioning but it needs running for three minutes before we can actually switch on the AC.

00:33:56: It's possible that in a hot tube at, I don't know how many degrees for like ten minutes before the air conditioning finally kicks in.

00:34:06: Luckily Air Conditioning on aircraft are very good.

00:34:10: once it comes on you can literally feel the cold air rushing and within two or three minutes its nice and cool.

00:34:18: but those ten are really, really bad sometimes.

00:34:24: And it doesn't even help to open a cockpit window because the outside is you know... You just get hot air blowing in.

00:34:32: so yeah

00:34:33: I can imagine like in a car when they opened the window It's doesn't necessarily get cooler.

00:34:38: Yeah

00:34:38: i mean The aircraft Because he switched off.

00:34:41: He doesn't tell us the temperature inside the aircraft because everything is off.

00:34:46: this all the sensors of but I would imagine it's not dissimilar to a car.

00:34:53: My car always tells me the outside and inside temperature.

00:34:58: on my app here, on my phone... And in the last few days, the inside air-temperature of the car when it was parked at the airport is between fifty five or sixty five degrees Celsius for one case even seventy-one degree Celsius!

00:35:17: If you got this inside the aircraft, You should be careful to touch a stick of the A-iii.

00:35:26: The cockpit is extremely because we have big windows so it's always about between three and five degrees warmer than the rest.

00:35:41: even with the aircon running It's always warm in the cockpit.

00:35:44: now

00:35:48: Stefan, we are approaching already the very last questions of my questionnaire.

00:35:52: You made it through the summer ops!

00:35:54: I almost feel a little bit like guilty conscious that you... on your rest day and somehow, so to say mentally reflecting the burdens of what you've worked.

00:36:09: It's okay!

00:36:11: What a rest-day is this?

00:36:14: Okay... What kind of mental coaches are coming up with stuff like

00:36:17: that?!

00:36:19: Well I chose this job but i cannot complain.

00:36:22: You know This Is My Love

00:36:25: The people just feeling in moment with you To make this so to say even work.

00:36:31: No, I don't make it worse But what are for you?

00:36:35: What is for your personal?

00:36:36: what do you see the biggest summer challenge all over the place?

00:36:40: I think it has to be thunderstorms.

00:36:45: Two days ago there was a score line A school line.

00:36:48: Is that a line of thunderstorms that all merge into one big line?

00:36:53: and It went all the way from the eastern Spanish coast all the way up through France, towards Marseille and then all the ways toward Nice.

00:37:06: So essentially we were completely cut off by this huge square line along the coast of just... The weather radar was red!

00:37:19: So there was no way we could get through unless we would all fly a huge way around, you know?

00:37:27: There were routing that they said is possible.

00:37:30: You take off from Mallorca and you fly towards Italy, Sardinia, Corsica... And then via Brenna, Innsbruck – That's clear!

00:37:41: But of course like I've said before….

00:37:43: We're talking one thousand two hundred planes per day.

00:37:47: They want to take this route.

00:37:49: So usually it's chaos, when that happens.

00:37:55: Thunderstorms are I think the biggest disruptor in terms of us being in the air.

00:38:02: what we have to do to avoid them and even before we get into there whenever they're thunderstorms its one hundred percent guaranteed.

00:38:10: if their along your route then you gonna have delays because European Airspace is at capacity.

00:38:16: There no margin for anything.

00:38:20: If anything goes wrong, it's just chaos because there is no room left you know?

00:38:27: No margins left.

00:38:29: everything is at capacity in the summer.

00:38:31: so for me when I see in the forecast thunderstorms i already think oh now its gonna be a bad day!

00:38:41: So that to me is the biggest challenge by far.

00:38:44: yeah

00:38:47: and what?

00:38:49: What is one summer tip for passengers?

00:38:53: I mean, some are certainly for passengers.

00:38:55: For tourists it's almost all day long.

00:38:59: you're all year-long.

00:39:00: You mentioned Dubai.

00:39:03: So let say passengers flying from a hot airport or in hot conditions Or what's one.

00:39:10: so does the summer quote?

00:39:11: unquote dip because as i said Summer is almost all year long In some places.

00:39:17: four passengers.

00:39:19: I would say be patient and be understanding.

00:39:23: When you get onto an aircraft, the crew tells you okay we are ready to go but unfortunately... We've just been told that we have to wait here for one hour.

00:39:32: Believe me!

00:39:33: The crew is just as unhappy about this As You

00:39:37: Are!!

00:39:37: We all like getting back home on time To see our families.

00:39:41: Many of us have plans after the flight, maybe see some friends and something.

00:39:47: So for us this is just as annoying... As you can imagine it happens now on an almost daily basis.

00:39:57: You'll have it when you fly once in holidays or back.

00:40:01: so we've got a lot of people that get angry with us because of delays but they're not down to their crew.

00:40:08: We would never wish to have delays.

00:40:10: If I could, i'd just fly on time every single day but that's not the reality.

00:40:15: So understand when you flight your holiday destination or back home expect maybe it won't be on time.

00:40:24: Doesn't mean it will be like my flights today.

00:40:27: sorry yesterday Every single flight was on time even though its height of summer.

00:40:33: now I've had many flights already over the last few weeks.

00:40:37: They were quite delayed, so just plan for that.

00:40:41: allow it be patient.

00:40:43: like i said It's not a cruise fault they don't do this on purpose and Just be understanding.

00:40:51: Sit in the plane enjoy the air conditioning listen to our podcast And then everything will be fine.

00:41:01: Hey Stefan you made some ropes done.
