00:08:04: Now for today's episode... In today's episode I had the honor to speak with Adrian Rocco Hinckleman, a sixteen-year-old glider pilot from Germany who is already building real flying experience step by step.

00:08:20: From cross country soaring to advanced flight simulation!

00:08:38: Young man is already living.

00:08:40: Would you agree, Stefan?

00:08:42: Yeah exactly so.

00:08:44: just to give a quick background we usually have very experienced people here on the podcast.

00:08:50: captains train us People that have done amazing stuff.

00:08:55: This podcast is for everyone.

00:08:58: When Adrian contacted us, we thought why not?

00:09:06: He's just doing his glider license and he wants to go into the airlines.

00:09:11: so He prepares for his future, what he does.

00:09:18: How... What he studies all that stuff.

00:09:22: maybe of interest to some other people out there That are thinking about getting into the industry or in the cockpit To see how someone else is trying to fulfill their dream.

00:09:41: Absolutely.

00:09:42: So yeah, without further ado let's get started with the interview and we'll hear you on

00:10:08: and

00:10:11: yeah I'm really looking forward doing this now.

00:10:20: Yeah, we are recording with Easter twenty-twenty six just a few days ahead Adrian!

00:10:31: Especially listeners in the Dach region will maybe remember these days.

00:10:37: The winter had strange comeback.

00:10:42: Let's say in the current moment, what are you doing?

00:10:45: I have just stuck out weather on my screen.

00:10:50: It's stuck at airport eight degrees so... ...I guess it is a good day to have a podcast and flight session.

00:10:58: No, took by sight!

00:10:59: Give us your current situation.

00:11:04: So yeah.... I am flying in my east of flying holidays with my glider i'm doing my SPL license and I have done on Sunday, first cross-country training.

00:11:30: It was like the first time when I flew in a glider out of Traffic pattern or like in the five kilometer radios.

00:11:42: We are usually fly around our airfield and it was really exciting to see you know, The Black Forests in Germany and South Germany.

00:11:54: It was really cool.

00:11:55: And yeah we flew on to Freundstadt that's at the edge of the black forest And when we actually came there over the city, could I see snow on trees?

00:12:18: It was kind of confusing because it always had a bit of summer mood.

00:12:24: Then suddenly I saw some snow in the trees under me!

00:12:31: I can imagine that this was literally cold.

00:12:34: so to get you right... even in this crazy weather conditions you picked out every possible day because they were not too many I think the last weeks, last ten days also to get up into air with a glider.

00:12:53: Oh yeah that's for sure.

00:12:57: well it was actually great weather there.

00:12:59: we had nice cumulus clouds but the cloud base was you know bit lower at the start of a day, but it actually got higher which made us could try higher then.

00:13:13: It actually seemed like a summer-day excepted temperature.

00:13:18: The temperatures were five degrees or something!

00:13:23: But the atmosphere was warm and I don't know what's weird...it was an illusion kinder that is funny.

00:13:32: But since then, I mean what you're doing now and the next days.

00:13:36: You use every possible better window which allows gliding for gliding at rest simulating ground school?

00:13:48: Well almost We don't...I don't fly sadly everyday when i want to because I have no license yet Maybe need to organize some things like people on the ground To get me up in the air and a fight instructor.

00:14:07: So it's a bit Likely unnecessary, you could say as I student pilot.

00:14:13: But my club is actually like so that when you get a license that That your eggs that they actually can call somebody You know who has a license for towing planes?

00:14:26: Yeah.

00:14:27: And yet she then at least need one another guy who holds your wing at the start of takeoff or something.

00:14:36: so you're wing doesn't get in contact with the ground right?

00:14:41: At the starting phase of toying plane, toying you up into air.

00:14:48: You could do that as a license and just communicate this some people.

00:14:57: but The really Easter flying is actually starting this Friday now.

00:15:07: And in that time, do I study for the

00:15:23: radio telephony you wrote me down?

00:15:28: The radio, the radio work, radio communication?

00:15:31: Yeah.

00:15:31: The radio telephony radio communication.

00:15:37: I'm doing this first version.

00:15:41: that's like for German and English.

00:15:45: yeah... I had a course there in my club too.

00:15:51: There was guy who acted as teacher.

00:15:56: He was playing the controller like at some airport and then we did a flight from A to B. Here it started getting your taxi clearance, takeoff etc... And so that you could start with German on the frequency You can call it!

00:16:22: Then you had to approach the destination airport in English or other way.

00:16:28: That was actually kind of fun too, but what surprised me is that it at beginning a bit more difficult than I thought because you know i'm flight siming now for like last three to four years and flying on wazim the last two years.

00:16:56: But, you know I thought that i would do better at the beginning because of my vatsim experience but it... You have to understand on Vatsim you mostly fly IFR or the most people who do at least and like the radio telephony communication thing is VFR only.

00:17:21: It was The Only Weird Thing.

00:17:24: It was not as always.

00:17:28: Yeah, right?

00:17:31: I mean real world and simulation.

00:17:34: there are often some differences speaking of experience but yeah i mean knock on wood here.

00:17:42: by the time this podcast goes online you will have earned your sailplane pilot license.

00:17:51: what changes after Adrian, what do you think will happen this year?

00:17:59: Maybe also the next year to have already a little bit of glimpse into your aviator future.

00:18:07: Well so the number thing is maybe that I have less mental things i have to worry about because I'm likely every day a bit excited because of the thought of having my license in a next two months or so, firstly that and it reduces like... ...the work I normally have throughout the days.

00:18:45: You know every day i look at what i've done something for my licence in school because I'm finishing school and two years or so.

00:19:07: And my grades are okay, accepting acceptable but yeah i am actually ok with it But I want to improve them a little bit more.

00:19:20: that's maybe important for my final exams you know.

00:19:28: Yeah, firstly that and I will continue flying gliders much more now.

00:19:35: As i then have access to other gliders which has much more performance than the gliders I've flown or our students pilots flow in our club so we could even discover you know South Germany and all that, it's a nice thought of flying out a bit more or to somewhere a little bit more distant.

00:20:13: Certainly

00:20:14: focusing on the school sounds more than necessary because you are aiming for the airlines but still I mean school is so-to say foundation!

00:20:24: to be good in school.

00:20:26: I think especially when you're looking maybe towards a scholarship program or something, this is hey go for it give your best.

00:20:35: yeah.

00:20:35: well coming through that i have actually researched around the internet and most say its not important aviation words.

00:20:57: when you want to come to the airlines it's a good thing, to have perfect grades.

00:21:06: When you want... ...to come to airlines especially for big ones like Lufthansa or Emirates I don't know here but i think.. ..i dont' wanna crush my head because only of school I want to continue flying, to continue a flying simulator and to enjoy my life.

00:21:35: And i'm saying that because the last years did have different mindset... ...I used to study very much for some exams but still got surprisingly bad grades which kind of gave me the motivation.

00:22:01: It got to steal my motivation, or yeah and I can remember the days when i started on in the summer In my room And then I looked out of my window and... I don't know saw some families out there having fun Or something kind of painful to watch sometimes and I know,

00:22:29: exactly because i was in a apprenticeship when i was a glider pilot then it hurts.

00:22:38: you have the perfect day but also some pretty important project.

00:22:44: yeah everything on its time.

00:22:47: And i'd say we leave like this You do best as you can at school But also certainly, you go on with flying.

00:22:57: I'd say we leave it like this.

00:22:59: and yeah if you allow Adrian take us back to your early beginnings because i mean With the lines You have written To me It seems to Me that you are almost a born pilot at least.

00:23:14: Yeah, i mean history.

00:23:16: twenty cockpit The plane Stefan or the airplane Stefan is Flying for living.

00:23:21: Certainly I think it was a game changer from early on.

00:23:30: So what's your question again?

00:23:32: What, like... You

00:23:35: were visiting as a kid.

00:23:36: you had the honor to visit an A-Street-Twenty cockpit so an Airbus cockpit.

00:23:41: Ah yeah

00:23:42: already

00:23:43: okay now i get that sorry

00:23:45: The beginning of um Yeah Of an aviation love story.

00:23:50: Oh yeah can remember.

00:23:54: Back then when I was six years old, they remember flying to Croatia for the holidays and I know.

00:24:02: I can remember it was with German wings And then coming Arriving there on the parking stand.

00:24:11: I Can't remember it Was Ossiak Airport.

00:24:15: Sadly There isn't as much airliners flying their thing today.

00:24:21: Yeah us back then.

00:24:23: And I can remember when almost, while leaving the airplane.

00:24:32: I was looking at a cockpit but kind of nervous or had fear like my heart was beating fast.

00:24:44: and then right when i wanted to leave the plane this stewardess offered me to visit the flight deck.

00:24:55: And then I said, yes okay and they can remember The captain was i think out and maybe checking their airplane or something but he wasn't in the cockpit.

00:25:09: there was only the first officer there looking for the MCDU or a flight plan of some clearances?

00:25:17: I don't know.

00:25:17: yeah!

00:25:20: Then I got into the captain's seat.

00:25:22: Wow, so you are a six year old captain.

00:25:25: This is great!

00:25:28: Yeah and I remember the first officer.

00:25:34: he actually offered me to push some buttons And my mother filmed me had made a video all about it... ...and i pushed like the red button on the sidestick And then it said the GPW just called out priority left and I pressed something.

00:26:03: You were a

00:26:03: captain, you are a captain!

00:26:05: Yeah?

00:26:06: I'm really a captain... ...and remember i think maybe push that button or something else but i don't remember now.. ..and only realized like a year ago when I was re-watching this video, what the GPS color actually is.

00:26:28: And it's kind of just kinda cool experience watching these very old videos and then finally understanding that what has now made this red button on the side is the Autopilot Disconnect Button.

00:26:50: but I mean airplane was safely parked if i get you right.

00:26:54: so it wasn't.

00:26:54: yeah

00:26:56: certainly no, somebody listening and now is saying what's going on there?

00:27:02: No.

00:27:02: You were already so.

00:27:03: Yeah,

00:27:04: yeah.

00:27:04: Airplane was certainly shut down.

00:27:07: But under... It was secure.

00:27:09: ...certainly everything was secured going here.

00:27:13: the next thing from then on you had the aviation bug.

00:27:18: Yeah, right and that was like the spark which now Changed my life.

00:27:25: Yeah That was like a moment when I felt like man.

00:27:32: There are people who live from A to B too two wonderful places for their living like And I couldn't like get that.

00:27:44: and yeah, and it was the moment when i wanted To become a pilot.

00:27:49: then

00:27:51: The next big step, I think was this.

00:27:54: What was it?

00:27:57: You got a birthday present This is the birthday present with twelve to get into a triple seven simulator.

00:28:04: Tell us story.

00:28:06: Oh yeah that That was a big one either and It actually played a role back A year ago when i was fifteen two.

00:28:17: So beginning of that my mother Gave me a gift to fly in a simulator of a Boeing triple seven and it was fascinating.

00:28:32: It was my really first time when I knew that flight simulation is existing or something, no i think back then there's Flight Simulation but only like.

00:28:49: But was this a full motion simulator like the airline TuseDog?

00:28:55: Sadly, sadly not.

00:28:59: Back then I thought... ...I knew only the simulators you could play on your phone or something.

00:29:06: but i have never thought of hardware even that nowadays from wing control or win-wing.

00:29:15: so yeah The flight was wonderful And it was absolutely magical when I first got to push all the knobs on the autopilot.

00:29:30: But in a sort of kind... Yeah, It wasn't a mock-up.

00:29:34: so there's a simulator company or something like that?

00:29:39: I can answer this question later.

00:29:42: and where were you from?

00:29:45: Yes!

00:29:45: I remember the autopilots Thing was my favorite section of the flight kinder, because that's kinda part you think about most or a bit.

00:30:00: Or handle what I had.

00:30:05: but i actually got to hand fly for first time really and the first officer who hosted this helped me a little.

00:30:17: And yeah, it was actually a really great experience.

00:30:21: Now I think three years later or so that i do another flight this time with my wallet and with my savings.

00:30:34: It's been very cool there again.

00:30:38: coming back There I got friend with the host there and i remember that was a woman too.

00:30:53: And she explained me really much about becoming an airline pilot, so on... ...and it was first time when understood what is takes from the license to be a pilot.

00:31:08: It's just really interesting.

00:31:12: And months later after this Had I liked the fort a random thought in the summer holidays when it was at the beach in Croatia, remember?

00:31:44: flight simulator at the Boeing triple seven flight simulator and that was a brilliant idea actually.

00:31:55: Yeah, I contacted the chief.

00:31:59: he managed everything said yeah okay um... He said yes i'm going to visit this simulator with someone who's hosting it.

00:32:14: observe how I handle some customers.

00:32:21: Like introduce the flight simulator, the airplane explain a few things and actually did very great.

00:32:31: but The problem was that Flight Simulator later got bankrupt or not bankrupt.

00:32:43: You have to see it like this, so our simulator was... Simulator

00:32:49: company went out of business.

00:32:52: That actually not really but we had Fader.

00:33:01: how do you say that again?

00:33:03: What did he want to say?

00:33:09: We had a service to pay for.

00:33:12: the simulator could be there And the owner of it, so... It wasn't like our place there where the simulator was.

00:33:23: Okay?

00:33:24: The owner sadly kicked us out.

00:33:26: and that actually really sad because at one point I got news from that which I actually scrolled through the internet looking for some other places.

00:33:42: we maybe could move the simulators go on, but my chief said yeah he doesn't have the motivation now to do this all.

00:33:54: Yeah... But I can maybe understand us a bit..but not really at that same time because the owner of the simulator, my chief back then is actually a pilot too.

00:34:11: all lots of different aircrafts, seven for seven, triple-seven and so on.

00:34:18: And it was a bit sad because I had actually then almost found the place.

00:34:27: but yeah... But that's great time even when there is like short window which i served here!

00:34:34: I could fly simulator to places where everyone in short breaks when we were waiting for the guests.

00:34:43: And yeah, it was actually a really nice time and I remember then like this time around that I bought the PMDG seven which is an actually cool too!

00:34:59: Then i could study bit more detail in this aircraft.

00:35:08: but yeah Let's take the next chapter.

00:35:16: You also wrote me your negative flight simmer, you already mentioned it with FATSIM etc.

00:35:24: and also a passionate plane spotter.

00:35:27: so... You got a passion for planespotting I guess in Stuttgart international airport?

00:35:33: Yeah mostly

00:35:35: And yeah, what about the flight seaming?

00:35:37: Tell us this side of your aviation career because you are quite versatile.

00:35:44: I mean plane spotting and glider with sixteen, wow!

00:35:51: Take a little bit into other categories in your aviation passion.

00:35:58: Yeah so like one year ago when... No, one year before I was signing up for the Boeing triple seven simulator to work with.

00:36:13: Did i really start my flight sim passion?

00:36:20: I started Watson and from Frostmaster Airbus Captain Pack.

00:36:29: it's like with the size stick.

00:36:33: change the side six so you can choose between if you want to fly with a side-six in captain configuration or first officer's configuration.

00:36:46: That was cool and it got like a throttle quadrant, which is also very cool!

00:36:53: You get actually the ignition starter mode Button and some other things you could do.

00:37:05: they were even flaps And Air brakes there.

00:37:11: It was the best thing.

00:37:12: You could get for two hundred fifty dollar dollars or euros.

00:37:17: What it?

00:37:18: Was really, really nice hardware product I've used a very long time and Yeah i have started on xbox.

00:37:28: actually I Got an Xbox Only for flight simming actually back then.

00:37:35: Okay,

00:37:37: and that was kind of fun I got to study the seven thirty-seven The first time from PMDG And the air three twenty And i can remember any builds Then publish their A three twenty more detailed one.

00:37:57: Yeah it's very cool because You could

00:38:01: talking study level aircraft on the PC.

00:38:04: certainly

00:38:06: Yeah, right exactly because in Xbox every twenty from a solo is It's nothing compared to the Phoenix every twenty and the every twenties just below of the Phoenix level.

00:38:20: I think yeah.

00:38:24: Then my father actually gifted me a gaming PC Out of nowhere, I was very surprised.

00:38:35: And the first thing that i did is to install Microsoft Flight Simulator and finally installed all the softwares and things you could download on PC but not on Xbox.

00:38:55: I started to buy some hardware products like the WinWing, MCDU for Airbus and Autopilot, FCU and ETHIS.

00:39:13: Even then upgraded my joystick Wing Control too or WinWING.

00:39:21: Yeah i'm still a bit confused with the new name of this company, I have to use a minor stick and it actually feels more realistically because they actually has the spring there built in which kind makes you feel better compared with my other joystick.

00:39:46: And then i even got a new throttle quadrant from WinWing too orient to f-fifteen for the cauldrons.

00:40:02: it's actually for military based airplanes meant but there are so many buttons on them on the frost levers and under quadrant itself that I thought all of would be great.

00:40:24: because I used to play DCS very much too.

00:40:29: I always flew the F-fourteen Tomcat, i loved that aircraft.

00:40:35: The only problem is that servers and multiplayer just kind of was a bit broken Because they enemies mostly had like f-sixteen or f-eighteen playing against me which is unfair.

00:40:51: They have an Aether Raider, a much better Raider.

00:40:56: And they had a much shorter time to fire missile at me and all that.

00:41:03: I'm right now not sadly active in DCS but i knew it was really great time.

00:41:11: One thing about flying DCS-II is last year... ...I was on the Aero in Friedrichshafen And I remember there was like this simulator hangar and it was an Austrian company that used, they built chairs.

00:41:37: That simulates like tubal lenses or so in the simulator which is really breathtaking.

00:41:46: Sounds immersive

00:41:47: yeah?

00:41:47: Yeah-yeah!

00:41:53: To try out the chair, I could see that you would get a VR headset on your head and... A little FAT in cockpit only with WinWing hardware too.

00:42:10: And i can already see wow this must be cool!

00:42:14: In VR?

00:42:15: I have never tried VR before back then and I really wanted to try it out And I actually made a friend there.

00:42:29: We started talking and this was like a spark of really great friendship, we are still friends now.

00:42:37: even today i've contacted him that I have booked some flights for the ELA in Berlin so they can go together.

00:42:49: Yeah, and coming back to the Austrian company there.

00:42:53: I remember all the people that were in front of me failed at trying to land At this aircraft carrier they're And it was actually the main objective That The People from this ocean company gave you?

00:43:14: It Was actually one Of the best feelings kinder too to be the only one of like these twenty peoples there, yeah.

00:43:24: To achieve their landing there!

00:43:27: It was really cool and I'm actually really proud there.

00:43:32: it's been a really good experience flying VR too because the VR headset costs nowadays up to five thousand euros which is insane.

00:43:48: but the quality was insane too.

00:43:51: I even got a bit motion sickness, because i don't know doing some loopings and rolls in it actually kind of failed to reel up with sometimes.

00:44:02: But yeah together with my data experience there Because i was a student pilot back then too And remember that week before or two weeks Before the visit and free stuff that had made me first solo Yeah, and it was actually really great experience there.

00:44:22: And we're looking forward to visiting the ILA in Berlin... and yeah!

00:44:28: Great Hey Adrian give us a short rundown of your passion as a plane spotter?

00:44:38: Afterwards i already would say We have to have second part in summer or

00:44:46: I don't

00:44:46: know, but yeah.

00:44:47: What's the motivating thing about plane spotting?

00:44:50: I guess there are many of them.

00:44:54: so The main thing about planespotting is that i think you have the most peace There and all your just standing there watching big metal tubes That allow which fascinates You.

00:45:12: And Yeah if you get If you have a great setup A great camera, you can actually take great pictures.

00:45:21: And a big thing is also that people who are into it... ...are mentally connected to their photos because looking back at them kind of takes us back this time where we may be used to being different and now you realize too maybe more the person that you actually want to be when you grow up or something.

00:45:52: But yeah, it's just fascinating especially when rare planes come in like... The rarest thing I have got on camera was Croatian MiG-QVII That is sadly not flying today.

00:46:16: Or yeah, the creation MIG-XXI.

00:46:18: nowadays generally don't fly nowadays and I can remember a picture when i took that was in the holidays too.

00:46:32: But honestly not really active right now on plate spotting because... ...i have like mid range camera.

00:46:40: you could say I'm looking forward to maybe get a new lens, camera.

00:46:49: To get much more sharper pictures.

00:46:53: and yeah... Maybe

00:48:42: And this is a hobby for itself too?

00:49:23: Yeah!

00:49:25: Im actually surprised.

00:49:28: Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it.

00:49:31: But there's like one more thing about flying gliders when being really young and It is the more psychology thing about that And you know its actually maybe a bit of a puberty too.

00:49:56: but yeah remember then When I had my first flying season, that sometimes when i didn't fly as good than I expected normally then I would like kind of maybe get really sad or so and even some months ago when I was starting for my theoretical exam.

00:50:26: I actually did the theoretical exam really better than i thought then it would be.

00:50:36: and It was kind of funny The day when I passed a test To know that night before, that had an emotional crash out because Of the meteorology Area there.

00:50:57: I didn't understand just really little things, which then may be kind of a crash out for some reason.

00:51:07: But yeah I actually did it.

00:51:09: now and for the ones listening And Yeah Just thinking about becoming a pilot or being already in that phase It's very important to know That you will improve with your career.

00:51:29: It's just really normal and I see a lot of student pilots who don't accept themselves or are too hard to them for not making this way.

00:51:50: And one more thing either, i see very much on social media like people who post that, yeah it's impossible to become a pilot or something or pictures.

00:52:06: Yeah I think this isn't true... It is maybe hard way for me come the airlines but its not possible because i see very much in some videos like a pilot who flies into the sunset.

00:52:21: many people are thinking how sweet so unreal that I may be sitting in this cockpit like him too, chasing some sunsets or something and then they automatically think maybe want to do it even though actually don't know what kind of potential there really have.

00:52:45: Yeah!

00:52:46: And...

00:52:48: I'd say you prove that is possible In a few years from now.

00:52:53: Hey and Adrian coming to the end of this interview.

00:54:50: but yeah when going for training right now or something, it's really important to not give up.

00:55:01: Because my mother recently asked me she came to me worried and ask with the airline pilot plan because she saw a statistic which showed that only five percent of people who participate in becoming an airline pilot actually succeed.

00:55:24: And then I calmed her down and said it's just because of the low, many people stop and don't have a motivation to continue.

00:55:37: so its very important that you dont give up even when it looks hard right now.

00:55:46: i found myself really in some Yeah, in various situations.

00:55:52: for example I one time more times even threw up by flying gliders but that didn't like stop me from now flying glider and right know on the cross-country flight.

00:56:20: Yes, free stomach viruses.

00:56:23: And I actually had asked HPT if that has to do with my tolerance and motion sickness?

00:56:36: It said yes all the diseases now reduced your tolerance against this motion sickness.

00:56:46: Then i found a really cool trick To practice the tolerance at home.

00:56:52: you like sit on a chair and spin around yourself with it A few times, then start looking to your left or right Like normally would do in VFR flight maybe And after twenty seconds of spinning You suddenly stop and focus one point.

00:57:11: That's what I'm actually now doing.

00:57:17: healthy while flying and it's actually a very underestimated thing too, I think.

00:57:24: Yeah

00:57:26: great advice here at the end And yeah as I said Adrian i'm looking forward maybe for our second interview this summer.

00:58:29: They were also, I think life on tape...I mean i really take him back a little bit when I was sixteen even so sorry with sixteen to be in an English aviation podcast Stefan.

00:58:49: No, same.

00:58:51: But I love the parallels between myself and many other people that know him because he was exactly like me.

00:59:01: He would go to a local airport take pictures of the aircraft build model aeroplanes spend time on simulators at home.

00:59:12: when we talked about this where they are today, I would read magazines about aircraft.

00:59:21: So i was really a proper nerdy plain nut and uh...I think A lot of the stuff he talks about tells me is probably the same And to me that's already our first indication That He has the potential To go very far in this industry.
