FlightSim Series – Part 4: Adventures, Part 2 – 767 Mastery, Alpine Playgrounds & Bay Area Blasts

Show notes

Episode 20 continues the ongoing FlightSim Series (Part 4) and moves deeper into the dedicated sub-series FlightSim Adventures. In Part 2, Jürgen Reis and Airbus A320 first officer Stefan Lorenz each bring three new standout experiences — blending study-level realism with creative exploration.

Stefan opens with a true Flight Team highlight: the legendary Level-D Boeing 767. Still admired years after its release, the aircraft remains a benchmark for immersive 3D cockpits and system depth. From a real-world pilot’s perspective, the 767 stands out as a masterpiece of airliner engineering — responsive, elegant, and rewarding to fly even by today’s standards.

Jürgen counters with an Alpine playground: departures from Samedan into the Bernina Alps, the Engadine, and the greater Eiger–Matterhorn region. Especially in Aerofly FS, the area becomes a dynamic training ground — whether carving through valleys in an F-18 or practicing precise mountain approaches. The Alps turn into both scenery and classroom.

Back to structured learning, Stefan shares a unique experience: acting as a virtual instructor in a shared cockpit Boeing 777 session. Connected online, guiding a friend through procedures and energy management, he demonstrates how flight simulation can become collaborative training. The message is clear — find a more experienced sim partner, connect, and learn together.

From there, Jürgen revisits one of the great playgrounds of flight simulation: San Francisco. Low-level passes under the Golden Gate Bridge, skyline flybys, Oakland Hills terrain work, and modern carrier operations — whether in high-fidelity military sims or classic setups — bring that unmistakable fighter spirit into the home cockpit.

Stefan then describes a real-world moment that translates beautifully into simulation: standing above an approach path in New Zealand and watching aircraft descend beneath him toward Queenstown. Observing complex terrain approaches from above offers a new appreciation for precision flying — and inspires recreating the challenge in a simulator.

Finally, Jürgen returns to one of the purest training exercises in sim history: the San Francisco Bay shuttle between San Francisco International Airport (KSFO) and Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport (KOAK). Short, intense, and demanding, the route forces pilots to think ahead — preparing for the next approach almost immediately after takeoff. Whether flown in a Learjet or a GA aircraft, it remains a timeless drill in focus and flow.

FlightSim Adventures, Part 2 expands the series from icons to interaction — from solo mastery to shared cockpit learning. It shows that the best flight simulation experiences are not just about aircraft or scenery, but about discipline, creativity, and the joy of flying together.
